AHM 5099B B&O Class S1 2-10-2 "Big Six" Locomotive #6206

The 2-10-2 type was a direct lineal descendant of the decapod 2-10-0. Application of the rear trailer truck was more for guiding than for support of the firebox. To provide a pair of guiding wheels for a decapod in reverse motion, a new class of locomotive was developed for helper service over Raton and Cajon pass. To assist freight trains up hill the natural procedure was to simply back down the hill for the next up-grade train. A locomotive that could travel equally well in either direction dictated that the decapod 2-10-0 with a two wheel trailing truck added should be named after the road that developed this configuration. Hence the Santa Fe was born on the road of its name sake. The AHM 2-10-2 Santa Fe represents a late steam era development of the grade climbing locomotive.

The Baltimore & Ohio's fleet of Class S-1 2-10-2s were often referred to as "Santa Fes" on most other lines, named after the railroad which first employed the wheel arrangement during the early 20th century. However, on the B&O they were known as "Big Sixes" because of their incredible size and 6000 numbering series. The B&O normally assigned its fleet in heavy drag service along its West End main line. The final 125 S-1's and S1a's acquired by the B&O between 1923 and 1926 featured larger drivers (64" verses 58"), larger fireboxes and an enormous 90' wheelbase. They were the largest and fastest 2-10-2's ever built and are often heralded as the very best of the type.
