AHM5061C Pere Marquette Class N-1 2-8-4 Berkshire Locomotive #1222

"The Pere Marquette Railroad's 2-8-4s were another variation on the Advisory Mechanical Committee's Berkshire design, sharing features with those of five other railroads. They had 69-inch drivers, 26x34-inch cylinders, and a boiler pressure of 245 p.s.i. They had a locomotive weight of 442,500 pounds and produced 69,368 pounds of tractive effort. Their evaporative heating surface totaled 4777 square feet, their superheater surface 1932 square feet, and their grate area 90 square feet. Lima Locomotive Works built all the Pere Marquette's 39 2-8-4s. Below, #1222 poses for the builder's photo of the N-1 class that was delivered in 1941. With the Pere Marquette's merger into the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1947 these Berkshires were to be renumbered into the C&O 2600 series, but the renumbering was never applied to the N-1 and N-2 classes. Retirement of the former PM 2-8-4s was complete by 1957, though some were not scrapped until 1961. Two of them survived the torch and #1225 is operational at the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan." (From: "Guide to North American Steam Locomotives" compiled by the late George H.
