FACTORY SEALED Spectrum 81704 Western Maryland 2-10-0 Class J-2 Russian Decapod

Prior to the start of World War One, the Russian Imperial Government ordered over 1200 "Decapod" type 2-10-0 steamers from Alco and Baldwin. But the Russian Revolution forced the cancellation of the order in 1917, leaving 200 undelivered. In 1918, these locos were rebuilt for US service and turned over to the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) who assigned them to various roads.

Though none were numbered 9700, the WM DID have two groups of 2-10-0s. The I-1 Class. nos. 1101-1110, were Russian Decapods weighing 219,000 pounds. The I-2s weighed 419,280 pounds, and had 30" x 32" cylinders and 61" drivers: tractive force was 96,300 pounds, almost as much as a USRA 2-8-8-2.
