First developed in 1866, the 2-6-0 Mogul was the first locomotive to use the radially turning two-wheel front bogie truck. The Mogul was an all purpose locomotive, similar to the smaller 4-4-0 Americans, but with better freight capabilities due to a top speed limited to 50 miles per hour and better pulling power. Wide spaced drivers also made for easier maintenance. Mantua's reproduction of these hugely popular workhorses first appeared in 1979 with a color change for the Southern road name in 1981. The Mogul disappeared from the catalog in 1984 only to reappear in 1995 with the new MC94 "Can" motor replacing the venerable 5-Pole Pittman.
Between 1899 and 1949 the SP amassed a fleet of 130 2-6-0 Moguls with Road Numbers from 1615 to 1836. We offer an Option to change to a more authentic Road Number should you be so inclined.
