IHC 23409 Command XXV PRR Class N-1 2-10-2 Locomotive #4882

The 2-10-2 type was a direct lineal descendant of the decapod 2-10-0. Application of the rear trailer truck was more for guiding than for support of the firebox. To provide a pair of guiding wheels for a decapod in reverse motion, a new class of locomotive was developed for helper service over Raton and Cajon pass. To assist freight trains up hill the natural procedure was to simply back down the hill for the next up-grade train. A locomotive that could travel equally well in either direction dictated that the decapod 2-10-0 with a two wheel trailing truck added should be named after the road that developed this configuration. Hence the Santa Fe was born on the road of its name sake. The IHC 2-10-2 Santa Fe represents a late steam era development of the grade climbing locomotive.

"PRR Lines West, from Pittsburgh to St. Louis, had its own idea about heavy freight power: the N-1 Class 2-10-2. It had an enormous firebox (79.9 square feet of grate) supported by a trailing truck that appeared not only inadequate but set too close to the drivers. Drivers were the same size as the I1, cylinders a half inch smaller, and weight 435,000 pounds. In 1918 and 1919 Brooks built 35 and Baldwin 25. At the same time the USRA assigned 13o 2-10-2s, class N2, to lines west. They had the same size cylinders as the N-1s, drivers an inch larger, and weighed 55,000 pounds less." (From: "The Guide to North American Steam Locomotives" compiled by the late George H. Drury.)

Sadly, none of the PRR 2-10-2s were numbered 4882. Not sadly, I've offered an option to renumber this great loco to an actual PRR Number.
