IHC Premier M647 NYNH&H Class R-1-a 4-8-2 Mountain Locomotive #3325

The USRA assigned it's first 10 light 4-8-2s to the NYNH&H for New Haven-Boston freight service. NH classed them R-1, numbered them 3300-3309, and liked them well enough to order 39 copies, 3310-3348, for delivery in 1920 and 1924. They were assigned to fast freight service on all the main lines except the Maybrook route. They were equipped with steam and signal lines for passenger service but their long, rigid wheelbase was incompatible with the slip switches in Boston's South Station, so what little passenger work they did was on the lines to Springfield and Worchester.. Many R-1s received minor improvements in the form of feedwater heaters, syphons or circulators and large tenders, but by 1940 were beginning to show their age. Readville shops replaced their Southern valve gear with Baker and equipped them with mechanical lubricators and they worked hard through the war.
