IHC Premier M926 Pennsy Class M1a 4-8-2 Mountain Locomotive #6707

Pennsy's last conventional freight locomotive was the M1 4-8-2 of 1923. It was based on the 2-10-0 I1 - the same boiler - and many parts were interchangeable. It had 27" x 30" cylinders and 72" drivers and weighed 385,000 pounds. Following the road's usual practice, Juniata built one which was tested thoroughly. Early modifications were a larger tender - the first one had a low-side tender appropriate for the E6 Atlantic - and mechanical stoker. Baldwin and Lima delivered a total of 200 M1's in 1926 and Baldwin, Lima and Juniata built 100 M1a's in 1930. Designed as a dual-service engine, some M1s were striped and painted for passenger service, but the New York-Washington electrification freed great numbers of Pacifics, which couldn't be used on freight but could be doubleheaded on passenger trains, to release the Mountain types for freight.
