MINT Upgraded IHC Premier M9854 Lehigh Valley K Class "John Wilkes" Semi-Streamlined 4-6-2 Locomotive HO Scale
IHC Premier M9854 Lehigh Valley K Class "John Wilkes" Semi-Streamlined 4-6-2 Locomotive
The Lehigh Valley Railroad can trace its heritage back to northeastern Pennsylvania and the great Anthracite coal rush that began with the Lehigh Coal Mine Company in 1792 and expanded during the War of 1812. Once this very hard, clean-burning product was discovered many individuals put projects into motion for its transportation to the Northeast's great metropolitan regions as a source of heating fuel.
The Lehigh Valley began delving into the streamliner market in 1938, in an attempt to compete with the larger railroads. The first two trains to receive very modest, but noted, streamlining were the Asa Packer and John Wilkes. (Named after a prominent British journalist and statesman, NOT the notorious Lincoln assassin.) Further and more elaborate streamlining would follow for the Asa Parker and John Wilkes when the LV hired noted industrial designer Otto Kuhler (who also styled such trains as the B&O's Royal Blue, Milwaukee Road's Hiawathas and the GM&O's Rebels) to modernize its trains.
The history of the LV, and of founder, philanthropist and politician Asa Packer, is fascinating and well documented in print and on the web. We highly recommend checking it out.
