IHCM631 Premier Class K2 4-8-2 Mountain #124

"In 1916, with the advent of steel passenger cars and longer trains, Roanoke created the road's first 4-8-2s, K-1s 100-115. These heavy Mountains could handle N&W's heaviest passenger trains. Their cylinder dimensions were "over-square" combining a 29" bore with a short 28" stroke. It was an effort to reduce piston speed, but resulted in the K-1s being hard starters. Alco's Brooks Works delivered 10 USRA heavy 4-8-2s (Class K2 116-125) in 1919. They were extremely successful, and the road went to Baldwin for 12 more in 1923 (class K2a 126-137)."
