IHCM624 Baltimore & Ohio Class T-3 4-8-2 Mountain Locomotive #5577

The B&O was famous, and rightfully so, for it's magnificent 4-6-2 Pacifics in passenger service while it's primary freight loco was the 2-8-2 Mikado. During World War II they needed to move freight between Pittsburgh and Chicago faster than it's Mikados could do it. Rather than upgrade the Mikados B&O decided to create 4-8-2s as the 4-wheel lead truck would be better for faster running. Between 1942 and 1948 the Mount Clare shops built 40 T-3 class 4-8-2s. All had 70" drivers and cast-steel engine beds with integral cylinders. The boilers came from old Mikados and Pacifics; they were lengthened at the firewall end resulting in a boiler that looks too small at the front. Some had roller bearings on all axles, others had none. Some had Vanderbilt tenders, others had rectangular tenders. In 1947 B&O also bought 13 Mountains from the Boston & Maine. These Class T-4s, built between 1935 and 1940, had 73" drivers. Unlike other Class 1 railroads, the B&O Mountains were rarely, if ever, used in passenger service.
