Mantua 336-001 AT&SF Class 507 4-4-2 Atlantic Locomotive #520 HO Scale
Mantua 336-001 AT&SF Class 507 4-4-2 Atlantic Locomotive #520
"Santa Fe's first Atlantic was a Camelback built by Schenectady in 1889. Ten more Atlantics came from Dickson in1899 which were converted to 4-6-0s in 1904. Santa Fe tried the Atlantic a third time in 1903 - four 73" drivered Vauclain balanced compounds from Baldwin and achieved success. Between 1905 and 1910 the road added 168 such locomotives to its roster. Some had 79" drivers, others, 73; all had the main rods connected to the first pair of drivers. In the 1920s most were either scrapped, with the boilers used for 0-8-0s, or rebuilt as simple engines which lasted into the 1940s." (From the "Guide to North American Steam Locomotives" compiled by George H. Drury.)
Mantua handsomely re-created the remarkable Atlantic, like this NEW MRRHQ Collectible HO Scale Mantua 336-001 AT&SF 4-4-2 Atlantic Locomotive, with authentic features which include a Stephenson valve gear, Belpaire firebox, 80" spoke drivers, full size ash pan and illuminated marker and reversing lamps. With elegant proportions, stately drivers, massive boiler and large trailing truck, the Atlantic was one of the most beautiful locomotives to ever fly across the rails.
First introduced in 1986, the 4-4-2 graced the Mantua catalog until 1989. After a five year hiatus, it reappeared in 1995 and remained in the catalog until Mantua's eventual demise in 2001. It remains one of the most remarkable model locomotives ever produced.
