Mantua 394-061 "William Crooks" Great Northern 4-4-0 Locomotive
The William Crooks was the very first steam locomotive to operate in Minnesota back on June 28, 1862 when it hauled passengers a distance of 10 miles from St. Paul to St. Anthony (now Minneapolis). It was named for the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Minnesota & Pacific Railroad, and Colonel of the Sixth Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers, in the Civil War.

In 1924, the locomotive went on an exhibition tour from Chicago to Seattle. The William Crooks later traveled to New York in 1939 for the New York World’s Fair and then to the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948. It went on display at the Saint Paul Union Depot from 1954 to 1962 when it was donated to the Minnesota Historical Society by the Great Northern and continues to this day on static display at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, MN. For many years William Crooks was the oldest locomotive in the U.S. operating under it's own power.
