Mantua 530 4-6-4 Hudson Locomotive Kit w/Synchro-Steam Sound

The 4-6-4 tender locomotive was first introduced in 1911 and was named "Hudson" after the Class J-1a 4-6-4s designed for the New York Central in 1927. Throughout the 1920s, '30s and '40s, the wheel arrangement was widely used in North America. The type combined the basic design principles of the 4-6-2 Pacific type with an improved boiler and larger firebox that necessitated adding a second axle to the trailing truck. In general, the available tractive effort differed little from that of the Pacific, but the steam-raising ability was increased, giving more power at speed. Like the Pacific, the 4-6-4 was best suited to high-speed running across flat terrain, was well suited for high speed passenger trains and held the world speed record at least twice. In both conventional and streamliner versions, the "Hudson" was often found at the front of many line's crack limiteds.

For two years only, in 1984/85, the Mantua Hudson was available in two road names equipped with their highly innovative Synchro-Steam Sound system. Perhaps, due to the relatively high cost for the time, the system was not commercially successful though, in typical Mantua fashion, it was both ingenious, simple and highly reliable. The resulting rarity make Mantua Synchro-Steam Sound locomotives some of the hardest to find and most desirable.
