The "Grey Goose" started life at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA when it was delivered to the Union Pacific in November, 1920. These prairie racers took a back seat to no one as they blistered across the boundless prairies of Nebraska and Wyoming at nearly 100 m.p.h. The Grey Goose was the heaviest Pacific on the Union Pacific weighing in at 461,000 lbs. with tender.

During the 1946 repainting program, No. 3219 was the only Union Pacific 4-6-2 to receive the distinctive gray paint scheme with white lettering.
