Mantua MN318-47 Atlantic Coast Line 2-10-0 "Decapod" Locomotive #318

The Decapod Type, in general, was not a universally successful design as it was riddled with issues that could cause the locomotive to be underpowered, somewhat unbalanced, and rough riding. However, 2-10-0's did have one big advantage that made it attractive to a handful of lines, its five driving axles allowed for very high tractive effort making the locomotive quite useful in heavy drag service in mountainous territory. Two railroads in particular found the Decapod very much to their liking in this capacity along their routes through the Allegheny Mountains; the Pennsylvania and Western Maryland. While the Pennsy perfected and put to use the most powerful 2-10-0s ever used it was the WM that operated the heaviest in regular service. Today, a little more than one dozen of these locomotives remain preserved with one that is currently operational. (From www.american-rails.com) The ACL DID roster two Class AK-3 2-10-0s numbered 7301 and 7302.

Mantua debuted their Decapod in 1979 with an undecorated kit and three road names: Frisco, Pennsylvania and Atlantic Coast Line. The CB&Q 2-10-0 followed in 1980. To introduce their Decapod, Mantua, basically, followed the same development route as the PPR who, for their 2-10-0, simply used the same boiler as their famous K4's with a shallower firebox. Mantua, in a true "path of least resistance" process for their Decapod, used the same heavy boiler from their 2-8-2 and 4-6-2 and numbered all (4) road names #318.
